Mr. Kurland practices with the Commercial Real Estate Group, as well as the Estate & Tax Planning Group. Jason has represented the Putnam Avenue Family Trust, the high-profile winner of the Connecticut Powerball $254.2 million lottery in 2011, which was the largest Powerball jackpot in the state of Connecticut and the 12th biggest in Powerball history. He also represented the $336.4 million Rhode Island Powerball jackpot winner, which was the largest Powerball jackpot won in that state and the third largest in the United States.
In addition to representing lottery winners Jason Kurland represents a number of clients in the sales, acquisitions, joint ventures and redevelopment of all types of commercial real estate including office buildings, hotels, apartment buildings, industrial facilities and shopping centers.
Named a "Rising Star" by New York/Metro Super Lawyers in 2012 and one of the "Top 40 Under 40" by Long Island Business News in 2011, Jason's practice also includes representing landlords and tenants in the leasing and subleasing of office, industrial, catering and retail space. He also lectures on the topic of commercial loan workouts.
The national media often calls upon Mr. Kurland for his commentary, especially when the jackpot stakes are high. He has appeared on various networks including CNN, CCBS, NBC, and ABC and has been interviewed on the radio and quoted in various newspapers, as well. Mr. Kurland recently authored a chapter for the 2013 edition of Inside the Minds: Best Practices for Structuring Trusts and Estates.
Mr. Kurland is on the Board of Directors of the Interfaith Nutrition Network. The INN addresses the issues of hunger and homelessness on Long Island by providing food, shelter, long-term housing, and supportive services in a dignified and respectful manner for those who seek help. In addition, he provides pro bono legal counsel to the INN. He also serves as an Associate Board Member of the Association for a Better Long Island.
For the past five years, Mr. Kurland has donated his time at the Walnut Elementary School in Uniondale, as part of the LIKE (Lawyers Involved in Kids' Education) program, which is affiliated with the Long Island Mentoring Partnership. He mentors 4th and 5th graders.
